Vocational Awards

Rotary sponsors a number of awards for particular aspects of vocational endeavour and for identified groups. These awards include Shine On Awards, Apprenticeship awards, Citizenship awards and Prise of Workmanship awards.

The District Chairman of our Vocational Awards committee is PP Andrew Forgas. He can be contacted by email via the form at the foot of this page.

Shine On Awards

Shine On Awards are an Australia wide Rotary award program that recognises outstanding service by persons with disabilities. The awardees are recognised for not letting their disabilities get in the way in reaching their goals to serve others.

Held annually, the inspiring Shine on Awards are coordinated by each of the five Victorian Rotary districts in rotation. The 2007-08 program was held in May 2008 and hosted by the Rotary Club of Appin Park, District 9790.  In 2008-09 the host club will be the Rotary Club of Richmond from District 9800 and the presentation ceremony will be held from 1.00pm to 5.00pm on Sunday 3 May 2009.

The venue for the 2009 presentation of certificates and trophies will be:

Hawthorn Receptions

555 Glenferrie Road

Hawthorn

Invitations will be issued at the appropriate time.

The Shine On Committee wants to encourage clubs to submit nominations for Shine On Awards from their local communities. Chairman Andrew Forgas can help with further information about this special Australian Rotary program. District 9810 is a part of the southern group (Districts 9780, 9790, 9800, 9810 and 9820) coordinated by the Rotary Southern Districts Committee.

How can our Rotary club be involved in Shine On?

  • Invite a Shine On Award Committee speaker to make a presentation to your club.
  • Establish a club sub-Committee to promote the Award within your club and your community.
  • Seek suitable candidates by using contacts with your local Disability Support Groups, by using the local media and through your club's community network.Schools in your area or local businesses may also have suitable potential applicants.

Citizenship awards.
These awards recognize students other than dux of their school who are potential leaders and have contributed to the community and their school. Selected by the school and awarded at VCE level, they are generally presented on speech night by a representative of your club. The watches are donated at significantly reduced prices through the Citizen Watch Company and generously supported by Alfred Sung from the RC of Wheelers Hill. He may be contacted on 0421 320 578. for supplies. The approximate price per watch is $75.00  You must supply details of your name, name of Rotary Club and address.

It is a wonderful way of connecting with schools in your area.

Pride of Workmanship Award.
Clubs can canvas employers from a variety of businesses in their area to find worthy applicants who have shown exceptional qualities in their work. Employees who give that little extra whilst performing their duties. A handsome Plaque is available from the RC of Pennant Hills (District 9680) for approximately $37.00. Again this award gives Rotary the opportunity to make contact with businesses in their area.

Apprenticeship Award.
More information on this award is available from the Chairman of Awards Andrew Forgas on 9807 2607. In summary, clubs search their District for suitable apprentices who may be interested to work in an overseas country for about 4 weeks to further their craft. It is then necessary to find a Rotary club to host them in the host`s country. Frequently that club in turn may send an apprentice to our District for similar reasons and you would be required to host them and find suitable employment for them

In conclusion individual clubs can design their own awards to suit their own vision and offer suitable recognition accordingly.
